SCIENTIFIC NAME: Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus
CULTURE: Daikon radishes require friable, well drained soils with a pH range of 5.8-6.8. Work soil deeply, in raised beds if possible, for straight roots and ease of harvest. Sow 10 seeds/30cm, thinning to 10-12cm apart, rows 35cm apart. Note planting seasons to reduce bolting.
INTENSIVE SPACING: 12 rows – 6cm per bed spaced every 6cm on the row (for semi-long and fine radishes)
- 6-row seeder (C-M-N); Hole Size C, Middle pulleys, brush setting N
- Jang seeder F-24 , X-24
INSECT PESTS: Use floating row covers at time of planting to control cabbage root maggots
HARVEST AND STORAGE: Daikons are brittle; use gardening forks or undermine and lift roots carefully. Cut tops 5cm above crowns, wash, and refrigerate. Daikons can be stored at 0C and 95% relative humidity for 6-10 weeks
AVG. DIRECT SEEDING RATES: 30g./85m, 120g/300m,2.2kg/acre at 6 seeds/30cm in rows 60cm apart, or 3.2kg/acre in rows 45cm apart
SIZED SEEDS: All seeds are unsized
