SCIENTIFIC NAME: Portulaca oleracea sativa
CULTURE: Plant after last frost. Purslane is sensitive to heavy frost.
DIRECT SEEDING: For baby-leaf: Sow 1-2 seeds/25mm. in rows at least 50mm apart. For full-size production: Sow about 13mm apart, 6mm deep. Thin to 10-15cm apart.
TRANSPLANTING: Sow 3-4 seeds per 25mm cell or pot in midspring. Cover with 3mm of soil. Thin to 2 plants per cell. After last frost, transplant to the garden about 20cm apart, using care not to damage the roots.
HARVEST: Pick as required to within 50mm of the plant’s base. New stems and leaves re-grow continually for several weeks.
DISEASE: Prevent disease using crop rotation and sanitation practices
